It’s often very difficult to keep up with the changing face of Clapham High Street. It was only on the fifth or sixth time of passing through Clapham Common that I realised The Fine Line was no longer. In its place was Bison and Bird, a stylishly appointed bar with something of an old west saloon about it. The bar is part of the same group that own The Elk in Fulham and it follows the same theme with plenty of cider wood panelling, exposed brickwork and eclectic furniture. Behind the bar the menu is fairly selective with a mix of 14 classic and original cocktails, and six red and white wines. The food menu is worthy of a perusal, offing a similar mix of staples and surprises – so a beef burger sits alongside a 100% real elk burger topped with pineapple and smoked chilli jam. The real talking point about Bison and Bird though is its happy hour. You can’t see campaigners against binge drinking enjoying the bar’s daily discount on cocktails and wine from 5-8 pm, but for everyone else, pitchers of cocktails for under £9 and complimentary nibbles may be just the tonic after a long day in the office.
