Nineteen Café Brasserie is an establishment which truly reflects its surroundings: British in essence but benefiting from global influences. Opened in November, head chef and partner in the business Vince Turnbull sees Nineteen as Streatham’s answer to Chez Bruce – a place where locals can find quality, creative dishes without having to commute to Clapham. Such ambition was immediately apparent from the décor of dark leather finishes and exposed brickwork matching the relaxed jazz soundtrack and the professional clientele. The starters were imaginative, varied and British, with a selection including Cornish mussels, Wensleydale soufflé or steak and mushroom suet pudding with neeps. The braised leeks wrapped in parma ham with truffled Hollandaise sauce were particularly outstanding while the venison loin and celeriac remoulade was delightfully complemented by the sweetness of the orange and hazelnut dressing. The choice of mains was an even spread of fish, meat and vegetarian options which nicely caters for all tastes, though the pick of these would undoubtedly have to be the simple rib of beef with roasted tomatoes, mushroom and chips. Using only British beef, at great expense to the restaurant which has decided not to pass this cost onto the customer, the meat is exceptional and is a glowing endorsement of home-grown produce – though having said that, it was well accompanied by a very reasonably-priced Italian Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. An crème brulee and a wonderfully creamy brie from Cornwall made for a fitting finale to this excellent and innovative Streatham fusion. It’s not quite Chez Bruce yet, but it’s a giant step in the right direction.
