Given that sushi generally sits alongside Marmite in the ‘you either love it or you hate it’ stakes, opening a restaurant dedicated to serving it is never going to be easy. In short, you have to be good to survive. Fortunately if you like your sushi, or more accurately, your nigiri, maki, sashimi or temaki, this place is a must-try. Opened late last year, Sushi 54 is owned by three siblings, Alex leads the front of house team and his sisters, Cammy and Gabrielle, take charge of the kitchen. Offers eat-in, home delivery (to as far as Richmond) and takeaway, Sushi 54 must have come like manna from heaven to any fish-loving local. With sushi, the importance of freshness, quality ingredients and careful preparation is paramount and this place displays all of these in spades. Housed in small, rather stark, surroundings this entrepreneurial trio make no pretensions about being anything other than focussed on offering the best food, at very reasonable prices. Inside-out salmon and avocado maki was stunning, the rice perfectly sticky and Californian temaki roll was crammed full of the lightest crab meat. The excellent sashimi confirmed that they buy their fish at its freshest and the dressing on the signature ‘Salad 54’ was a triumph of delicate flavours, expertly combined. Hot food is currently limited here due to planning restrictions but I hope these will be lifted to help broaden an already substantive and well thought out menu. The wine list and drinks offering was also rather limited at present, but I’ve no doubt this will grow in time as trade increases, and increase it will, of that I’m in no doubt. From small beginnings, big things grow… Never has that been a more appropriate statement than for Sushi 54 on Lower Richmond Road.
